RISK OF PAD

Being aware that you have risk factors for PAD

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a common circulatory problem that occurs when arteries in the legs and arms become narrowed or blocked. These blockages are often the result of a buildup of plaque (cholesterol) called atherosclerosis. PAD is dangerous because these blockages not only restrict blood flow and oxygen to the limbs, but they can affect other organs like the heart and brain. More than 3 million Americans are affected by PAD every year. PAD is the most common cause of lower leg amputations, and when diagnosed and treated early most amputations can be avoided.

Peripheral Artery Disease signs and symptoms include:

Pain and/or dull aching in the legs
Cramping in the legs, thighs, or hips
Difficulty with walking
Marked decrease in temperature of your lower leg or foot compared to the other leg/or other parts of the body
A change in the color of your legs
Hair loss or slower hair growth on your feet and legs
Slower growth of your toenails
Shiny skin on your legs
Erectile dysfunction in men
Foot or toe wounds that won’t heal or heal very slowly
